Victory
party at the Vertigo Dinner
Dear Friends,
Many thanks to everyone who came
out Tuesday night to
celebrate our victory and to all those who made
this campaign such a
success. It was a wonderful evening that I will
always remember.
A number of
people have asked me today how our team managed
to garner 49% of the
vote in a four-way race. I believe that the margin
of victory is in large part
attributable to the fact that voters could feel
the heart and soul that was being
put into the campaign by all involved. Canvassing,
post cards, yard signs,
neighborhood meet-n-greets and poll work combined
to create a strong
grassroots effort. That personal approach was
overlaid on a solid platform of
jobs and economic development, education, state
employees pay and
benefits and urban growth - issues that voters
clearly care about.
In a
Democratic primary that made for tough choices,
your decision to stand with
me was greatly appreciated. Cary Town Council
Members Nels Roseland and
Julie Robison and past council member Harold
Weinbrecht's support of me in
Cary was invaluable. I'm also grateful to institutional
groups that decided to
endorse in the primary as opposed to waiting
for the General. In particular, the
Conservation Council and especially Brownie and
Bud provided many
resources. Sierra Club'ers and the broader environmental
community provided
the base of support that they always have and
for which I am extremely
grateful. Equality NC came out early on with
their endorsement and was a
huge help in terms of fundraising and volunteers.
The labor endorsement was
a great vote of confidence and the Independent's
endorsement and strong
coverage of the race was invaluable.
On a more
personal note, thanks to all
the folks who made me laugh, touched
me with
their generosity, gave advice,
listened and otherwise provided friendship
and
support during the past few
months.
We have Republican opposition in the
General Election so our work
is not done yet. The primary that we just completed
was memorable in that it
remained positive and issue focused. I talked
to both Jack Nichols and Carter
Worthy yesterday and am hopeful that we will
have a united Democratic front
going into the fall. I've also already sat down
with Zach Ambrose, Director of
the Senate Democratic Caucus (works to make sure
Democrats are elected
and maintain a majority in the NC Senate). I'm
looking forward to working
together with the Caucus in the coming months
as they have access to
information and resources that will strengthen
our team even further.
We'll
have more details about the continuation of the
campaign coming up, but right
now everyone should take a well-deserved break!
We'll probably have our next
event in late August after school is back in
session. The General Election is
Nov. 2
Thank you again for all your hard work.
We should all feel good about
yesterday's Tuesday's victory and take a well-deserved
rest. I'm excited about
being one step closer to earning a seat in the
NC Senate and being part of a
high-intensity fall election.
Sincerely,

PS. Let's help clean up our community. As you
are driving around this
weekend, please help pick up yard signs (ours and
those of other campaigns
that have no runoff) along right of ways. Save
the stakes, so we can re-use
them in the fall. You can recycle the signs. We
will get new ones printed that
actually look like clouds, not a tie die. LOL.
